Workers at YUVA Electronic (Myanmar) Co., Ltd report being forced to work more than 20 hours of overtime per week. They say they are also made to work on Sundays, thereby missing their rest days.
“They make us work on Sundays without paying double wages. We only get one day off a month. We work until 8:30 PM every day,” workers said.
On Saturdays, workers must work until 7:30 PM. They also face pressure to meet production targets, with increased demands based on order volumes.
“They take in a lot of orders and are afraid they won’t meet deadlines. So, they call overtime until 7:30 PM. Lines that still can’t finish are made to work until 8:30 PM. They threaten more overtime if we don’t agree. They didn’t even close on Martyrs’ Day or full moon days. The quotas keep increasing,” they explained.
Township labour officials visited the factory recently, but workers said there was no clear opportunity to ask questions or raise concerns.
“Labour officers came, but we couldn’t talk properly. The factory managers were hovering around, so we couldn’t say anything,” one worker said.
Workers say those unable to do overtime are being pressured to resign by the factory.
“They basically say, ‘Work if you can, quit if you can’t.’ So, some workers are leaving. The pay is low too. Daily wage is 8,500 kyats, overtime is 2,000 kyats, and the attendance bonus is 40,000 kyats—that’s all we get,” workers added.
YUVA Electronic (Myanmar) Co., Ltd is owned by Chinese citizen and employs about 300 workers. Workers say they’re unsure whether a Workplace Coordination Committee - WCC exists within the factory. The factory is located on Bamaw Atwinwun Road, Thilawa Special Economic Zone, Thanlyin Township, Yangon.
