Workers at XIN YUAN FU ZHUANG garment factory have reported to the Industrial Workers Federation of Myanmar (IWFM) that the factory is cutting leave entitlements without allowing workers to take their earned leave. They also say there is discriminatory treatment between departments and sewing line workers.
“Sewing workers get 10,500 MMK in daily wage, but other departments only get 8,000. They separate sewing line workers from other departments like this. They cut 25,000 MMK if we miss one day. Miss two days, and they cut the full 50,000 MMK. They even deduct the skill bonus,” workers said.
Workers also claim that foreign nationals directly manage the factory floor and pressure them with high production targets. Supervisors shout and verbally abuse the workers when they fail to meet these targets.
“There are foreign supervisors and even the owner manages directly. Those foreigners yell and curse at us inside the workplace. They demand unrealistic production targets. The line supervisors scream and insult us if we can’t meet those,” they said.
Underage workers are reportedly employed, and there is no on-site clinic or nurses to support workers who fall ill, suffer heat exhaustion, or get injured on the job. Workers said it’s very difficult to get leave even in those situations. Workers are facing serious health problems due to the lack of fans and inadequate toilet facilities.
“There’s no surprise we feel being unwell inside the factory. The heat is unbearable. The toilets are insufficient and unhygienic. Workers are getting sick again and again because of that,” a worker said.
Additionally, workers said they must sign in and out to use the toilet. The Chinese citizen-owned XIN YUAN FU ZHUANG COMPANY LIMITED is located on Yawatwinwun U Pho Hlaing Street, Shwe Lin Ban Industrial Zone, Hlaingtharyar Township, Yangon. The factory employs over 500 workers and is producing garments for brands like LCWAIKIKI CLASSIC and MS mode.
