Workers Report Verbal Abuse and Unlawful Wage Deductions at Yuan Hong Factory Located in Hlaingtharyar

Workers from YUAN HONG GARMENT Co., Ltd have reported facing verbal abuse and illegal wage deductions at the garment factory, according to testimonies provided to the Industrial Workers’ Federation of Myanmar (IWFM).

The A5 sewing line is reportedly the worst affected, with the supervisor whose name was withheld accused of applying pressure and engaging in excessive verbal abuse.

“They say things like ‘you’re worth nothing in front of everyone during the meeting. They say we’re not worth the money we’re paid when we don’t meet the target. They even swear while pointing fingers and pressure us under the excuse that ‘it’s urgent,’” said one worker.

Workers say no effective action has been taken and that conditions are only getting worse despite multiple complaints three to four times to the factory manager.

That same supervisor also serves as a Worker Coordination Committee (WCC) representative, but workers allege she sides with the employer, leaving their rights unprotected.

Additionally, deductions are reportedly being made under the pretext of workplace rules.

“They deduct between 1,000 to 1,500 kyats if we forget to wear the ID string. We don’t get paid in full even when we meet the production target. For example, if we sew five points’ worth, they pay only for three,” workers claimed.

When workers fail to meet the production quota, skilled worker bonuses are deducted, and they are forced to sign a reprimand form to give the impression they agreed to the cuts.

These reprimands are reportedly taken not at the office, but directly in workbooks under pressure and abusive language.

Workers who request legally entitled leave are reportedly denied outright. “The supervisor says, ‘Go complain if you want. No one gives a damn,’” one worker shared.

Workers lose 11,000 kyats in day wages plus an additional 30,000 kyats in attendance bonus if one day of leave is taken amounting to a 40,000 kyat deduction, according to workers.

Daily wage workers have also reported being unlawfully dismissed during periods of low production. Meanwhile, CCTV cameras have been installed inside the factory to monitor workers in a manner that workers say resembles surveillance of prisoners.

YUAN HONG GARMENT Co., Ltd is located in the Shwe Lin Ban Industrial Zone, Hlaingtharyar Township, Yangon, and is a Chinese citizen-owned factory employing around 800 workers. It manufactures international brands including Closshi, Choco Raffine, Zero, JP, Reserved, and Ambianee.
