Workers from GLAMOUR GARMENT CO,LTD which locates at Shwe Yin Aye Phaya Street, Hlaing Thar Yar Township said that they are having health issues after having to work 15 hours a day and overtime on day offs.

The factory is known to be owned by a Chinese national and manufacturing ROSA CLARA bran apparels.

It is said that the working hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. and overtime is forced mandatorily. Workers who refuse to work overtime are discriminated and treated with malice.

“Our health are affected after working overtime until 11:00 p.m. We don’t have enough sleep and faint in the factory,” the workers said.

Although they were working 15 hours a day the factory calls overtime on Sunday which is their regular day off thus making them to work everyday without a day off. They are not entitled to medical and casual leave although they are contributing for social security fees every month.

“We can’t take leave for any reason no matter it is emergency or health issue. Daily wage 7,000 kyats and attendance bonus 20,000 kyats; a total of 27,000 kyats is cut for taking leave a day, Daily wage 7,000 kyats starts only at this month” said a worker.

Workers said that their phones are confiscated by the factory without their consent and it cause them difficulties to contact for emergency issues.

“We don’t’ have a trade union but there is a WCC. It is appointed only by the employer and they don’t address our problems,” the workers said.

“The Chinese national at the factory gives attractive girls money and title to make their companion. Workers know this but aren’t dare to speak out,” said a worker who don’t want to be named.

There are no changes in the factory although the inspectors from the relevant departments visited the factory.

The workers demanded 5 things to the employer to resolve:

1. To not force overtime until 11:00 p.m. mandatorily

2. TO allow legal leaves such as medical and casual leave

3. To not confiscate workers’ phones without their consents

4. The Chinese national to not make Myanmar women their companion by giving money and title

5. The supervisors to talk only about work affairs in the meeting and to not intimidate the workers
