It has been reported that workers at the Hsi Shaung Kway garment factory were dismissed for refusing to work overtime. Workers said that 15 employees were fired for not working overtime during the New Year holiday.
“They said the New Year holiday was a day off, but then they called for overtime work. The 15 workers who didn’t agree to work overtime were dismissed,” a worker said.
Workers also reported that a Chinese national at the factory exercises arbitrary control over workers on the shop floor and has physically assaulted them.
“A Chinese man punched a male worker from the packing department on December. He said it was because music was playing. But that kind of music is always played,” a worker said.
The factory has been operating for over a year, and workers said they have not been granted any type of leave or leave entitlements. Absences are recorded as missed days, and wages are deducted accordingly.
“We have to pay social security contributions every single month, but we don’t receive medical leave or casual leave at all. As soon as you miss a day, both the daily wage and the attendance bonus are fully deducted. Missing one day results in deductions of more than 30,000 kyats,” a worker said.
Workers also said the factory produces reflective garments, and that the Chinese national in charge verbally abuses workers if production targets are not met.
“There are 30 workers on one production line, and we are required to makes more than 80 pieces per hour. The Chinese national shouts and insults us if the target isn’t met. There is no Myanmar HR officer to file complaints with,” a worker said.
The Hsi Shaung Kway Garment factory is owned by Chinese citizen and is located on U Hmo Road, Industrial Zone (2), Hlaing Tharyar Township, Yangon. More than 150 workers are employed at the factory, which produces reflective safety vests.
