Workers from MYANTO INDUSTAIAL garment factory which is manufacturing AMISU brand apparels with more than 500 workers said that they factory ask excessive fabric outputs which is beyond their productivity and they are not even let to use the restroom or take a water break before finishing them.

The factory is located at Mya Khatter Street, Mya Sein Yaung Industrail Zone, Hlaing Thar Yar Township and there is no workplace meditation mechanism such as trade union or workplace coordination committee.

The factory has been operating for less than a year and the working hours are from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm and the wages are 4,800 kyats for daily wages, 1,000 kyats for allowance and attendance bonus and overtime wages.

“The main problem is factory asking excessive fabric outputs which is beyond our productivity and not letting us use the restroom or take a water break before finishing them. They make a rule not to bring water to the cavity which makes us difficult and we have to sign warning if we bring water,” workers said.

Workers said that they are humiliated every day by the supervisors who verbally abuse them if they don’t meet the fabric targets.

“There is a so called water purifier in the factory but the water is purified and it has odors. The restrooms are also not clean and some of them are damages but the factory doesn’t repair that. We want the restrooms to be comfortable and we want them to provide a drinking water due to the hot season,” said a worker.

Workers explain their losses saying that only those who are confident with the supervisors are granted casual and medical leaves easily but the others are labeled as absent.

Workers are requesting that to ask only the possible fabric outputs, the supervisors not to verbally abuse the workers and to give them access to legal benefits.
