Workers at Shuangxi Myanmar Garment Co., Ltd have reported to the Industrial Workers Federation of Myanmar (IWFM) that they are being pressured to meet garment production targets that are impossible to achieve.
“They’re making one worker do two operations in a line of 20 workers where the line is required to sew 25 garments per hour. We get blamed and punished with unnecessary accusations and reassigned to other tasks when the target isn’t met. Aupervisors yell and insult us if we can’t meet the production target,” said workers.
They added that despite the pressure to meet these high quotas, even a small defect in the garment can result in workers having their ID badge confiscated by the office. In cases where a product is rejected, management has threatened to deduct from their salary.
Within the factory, workers are also denied basic labour rights such as access to social security benefits, medical leave, or casual leave. Management has reportedly warned that salaries will be docked for any leave taken.
“We lose over 30,000 kyats in deductions per day,” said one worker.
Due to the constant pressure and intimidation, some workers have tried to raise their concerns, but factory management responded by threatening to report them to the military council.
“They told us we don’t have the right to protest. They claimed we’re not allowed to strike because the WCC agreement hasn’t reached one year yet. So, does that mean we have to suffer in silence until a year is up? They even threatened to file legal charges with SAC against any workers who protest,” workers said.
Workers also reported that the factory employs over 40 underage workers aged just 14 or 15 without any health certificates or medical clearance.
Additionally, the factory opens only one or two narrow exits at the end of the workday, which causes difficulty for workers leaving, especially pregnant workers.
“Only one or two exit gates are opened at the end of the shift for hundreds of workers. It’s hard to get out quickly, and it’s especially difficult for pregnant workers,” they said.
Shuangxi Myanmar Garment Co., Ltd employs over 600 workers and is located on Makara Minthagyi Maung Pyo Road, in Hlaingtharyar Industrial Zone, Yangon. The factory is owned by a Chinese citizen and reportedly manufactures the splendid brand.
