Workers at Tianjin Fashion Milestone garment factory report that they are being made to carry garment loads up and down between floors manually. The factory reportedly has two buildings—A and B—both two-story buildings.

“There’s an elevator in Building A, but not in Building B. So, we have to carry things up and down manually. Male workers do this every day. Sometimes female workers are also made to do it.

We have to carry the loads manually every day like laborers doing heavy work,” workers said.

Although complaints were made to the HR department, workers say they were told there wasn’t enough space and no arrangement has been made.

The loads being carried are garments, and workers worry about the risks of accidents and potential harm.

“It's us who will suffer and gets hurt by slipping . We have to carry unfinished garments up, and carry finished garments from the sewing lines back down. Even women who work in QC are being made to haul bundles and push carts instead of doing inspection work,” workers added.

It is reported that the Finishing Department is assigning both male and female workers to perform these tasks.

On Sundays, workers are being forced to work overtime, and line supervisors are allegedly verbally abusing workers while pushing them to meet unrealistic production targets.

“Even on Sundays, they force us to work overtime. They threaten us, so people are scared and comply. The garment targets they demand are unreasonable. We get scolded if we can’t meet them. They don’t give us the promised bonuses when we actually meet the target. They calculate by population. They say we failed and cancel the bonus f one person doesn’t finish 10 pieces in an hour. The factory doesn’t meet workers’ needs at all,” workers explained.

Despite employing more than 1,400 workers, the factory reportedly has only around 10 toilets, which are said to be consistently dirty and lacking in safety.

“Emergency medical supplies are also not available in many cases. The nurse only refills the medicine boxes when there’s an inspection. Even when there is a nurse, they’re reluctant to give us medicine. Supplies run out most of the time. There are only three toilets upstairs and four downstairs in Building A. There are only five toilets for men in Building B, and they are always filthy,” workers said.

Tianjin Fashion Milestone is a Chinese citizen-owned garment factory located on Seikkan Thar Road, Shwe Lin Ban Industrial Zone, Hlaingtharyar Township, Yangon.
