Workers at Tha Shu (Myanmar) Glory Fashion Co., Ltd. say they are required to work four all-day and all-night overtime shifts per week. They report that after completing overnight overtime, they are not given rest the following day and must return to regular working hours, resulting in health problems.
“We work all day, then all night, and the next day we have to work all day again. We don’t get enough sleep. Our immune systems weaken and we become unwell,” a worker said.
The factory is located on Than Lwin Road, Shwe Than Lwin Industrial Zone, Hlaingtharyar Township, Yangon, and employs around 1,200 workers.
According to workers, the factory demands production targets of more than 30 garments per hour from production lines of around 65 workers. They say they have to sew without drinking water or going to the toilet in order to meet these targets.
“If we fail to meet the target, they call for all-day and all-night overtime. We have to work four days a week like that. The next day, there is no rest. We have to return to normal working hours,” a worker said.
Workers also state that legally entitled leave, including casual leave and medical leave, is not approved by the factory. As a result, daily wages and other benefits are deducted.
“The daily wage is 11,000 kyats, and the attendance bonus is 40,000 kyats. If we miss one day, 20,000 kyats is deducted from the attendance bonus. If we miss two days, the entire attendance bonus is deducted. If we are absent, more than 30,000 kyats is cut,” a worker said.
Workers further report that drinking water is supplied from a well through pipes, and toilets are not separated for men and women, creating additional difficulties.
The factory, owned by a Chinese citizen, manufacture the Large brand.
