Guardians are expressing concern that students who have already entered the workforce will face difficulties in retaking the university entrance exams, which the military council has announced must be re-sat. The Ministry of Education under the military council issued the retake schedule on April 21, following the destruction of exam answer sheets by fire during a major earthquake.

"It was already tough for them to complete their schooling. Now they are already working in various workplaces. Some have even moved to different locations for jobs. It will be hard for them to retake the exams. Plus, there is still the risk of conscription when traveling. If they miss this chance, it will be very difficult to retake the exams next year," said a local resident from Mandalay.

Due to the major earthquake near Sagaing City on March 28, the university entrance exam answer sheets stored at Mandalay University were destroyed by fire. The military council has organized for the exams to be retaken as the answer sheets from Mandalay Region, Kachin State, Sagaing Region, and Naypyidaw were among those lost. The retake exams will be held from June 16 to June 21, according to an announcement by the Ministry of Education and the Myanmar Board of Examinations under the military council.

"My cousin sister is now working in Yangon. Her family struggled a lot for her previous exams. Just about a week after the exams, she left for work. She still has her job. Traveling back all the way to Sagaing is uncertain. It will be chaos if she doesn’t," said another local resident from Sagaing Region.

Students who sat for the exams at the exam centers in Min Kin, Pan Saet, Tamu No.1, Shwebo No.2, Ye U No.1, Banmauk, Wuntho, Mawlaik, Kintat, and Yay Yat Taw high schools in Sagaing Region are exempted from retaking the exams, according to the announcement.

Candidates who need to retake the exams must collect their new exam admission cards from their respective university entrance exam supervisors between June 1 and June 15, as stated in the announcement.
