Workers at the Myanmar Ju Chuan Footwear factory said that supervisors and assistant supervisors are subjecting them to verbal abuse, threats, and coercion. These incidents are said to be taking place at the new factory branch, while the company operates both a new and old facility.

“That’s a new production line and workers are new, too. I couldn’t attend on the day they started the motor training, and the assistant supervisor scolded me. The line supervisor as well,” said a female worker.

Workers added that the verbal abuse by the supervisors is not only harsh and rude but also includes physical intimidation. They also reported being challenged with statements like they [workers] could report them [supervisors] anywhere.

“They say things like, ‘You wh**es can’t even manage this? Don’t you have f**king eyes or are you f**king blind? They insult us with explicit language and say things like, ‘I am going to stab you with scissors,’” the workers said.

Some workers have already resigned due to the harsh treatment, while others said they are enduring the situation because they have no better option. Additionally, there have been reports of violations of overtime laws.

“Some have already quit. Those who can’t afford to leave are just silently crying and enduring. We’re made to work OT until 8 PM without even being asked. The supervisors and assistant supervisors just sign the OT approval themselves. They force us even if we explain that we can’t work. They told us not to come to work the next day if we don’t show up for overtime,” workers said.

The daily wage, including OT snack allowance, was raised to 13,000 kyats recently after workers demanded a pay raise at Myanmar Ju Chuan Footwear Factory.

Myanmar Ju Chuan Shoe Factory is a Chinese-owned company operating two facilities located on Min Eayar Road, Shwe Than Lwin Industrial Zone, in Hlaing Thar Yar Township.
