Workers at Sky Fashion Myanmar Co., Ltd reported that the factory’s production manager verbally abuses them with microphone when they fail to meet garment production targets. According to workers, each sewing line with 50 people is tasked with producing more than 40 pieces per hour using slippery fabric.
“The production manager yells, saying things like ‘Your mouths aren’t even worth as much as my ****’ and calls women slur words if we don’t meet the target. It happens daily. Eventually, we feel worthless. The supervisors follow suit and pressure us for more production after the manager scolds us,” workers said.
They also reported being required to work both mid-night and all-night overtime every week, including two Sundays a month. Despite this, no transportation is arranged after overtime shifts, so workers have to spend their earned wages on commuting.
“They shout at us and pressure us if we refuse overtime. They hold grudges if we decline. There’s no factory transport after finishing overtime late at night. We have to call a taxi to go home and rent a motorbike or trishaw to get back in time the next morning. The money we earn from overtime all goes to transportation. It's exhausting,” they explained.
Workers also stated that the factory denies them legal entitlements such as rest leave and medical leave. If they miss even one day of work, 25,000 kyats is deducted. The entire attendance bonus is cut if they miss two days.
Additionally, workers said the factory deducted previously earned overtime pay due to a one-day closure for roof repairs. And they were forced to work on a Sunday as a makeup day for a day when production was canceled due to low voltage electricity.
“Even though we worked 8 hours of overtime, they deducted it because the factory closed for a day due to roof repairs. When the factory released us early because of low electricity, they made us come back on Sunday to make up for it,” workers added.
Though an EC (employment contract) exists between workers and the factory, workers claim that there is no independent labour body to mediate complaints. When inspectors visited the factory last month, workers say management hid 11 of the 13 production lines at the back of the factory, leaving only two lines visible during the inspection.
