Workers at Sky Fashion Myanmar Co., Ltd, a garment factory, told the Industrial Workers’ Federation of Myanmar (IWFM) that factory officials not only cut daily wages but also provide unequal pay based on departments.
“They pay sewing workers a daily wage of 10,000 kyats, while workers from other departments only get 8,000 kyats. Sewing workers receive 50,000 kyats for the attendance bonus, and those from other departments are given only 40,000 kyats,” workers said.
They also said that two workers who raised the issue of equal pay with the employer were dismissed. In addition, workers who answered truthfully during brand audits also faced dismissal.
Two cutting workers who demanded equal pay were laid off under the pretense of staff reduction and were given payout based on the days they worked. According to workers, five workers who answered honestly about violations when auditors from the brand visited the factory were also dismissed.
They said the factory not only reduces wages for workers who resign but also implements illegal practices. Supervisors and line leaders reportedly scold and pressure workers to meet production targets.
“They give us only 10,000 kyats if we submit a resignation letter, but if we quit without notice, they pay us with just 6,800 kyats. They force us to work overtime and overnight when production targets aren’t met. We have to work every Sunday. Supervisors and line leaders scold us every day when production targets aren't met.”
Workers also said that they don’t know what casual leave or sick leave is. They are not allowed to take medical leave even though social security fees are deducted. Their daily wage and attendance bonus are cut when they miss a day.
They said it is hard for workers to even go to the toilet they are not allowed to use the restroom without a toilet card and they are constantly pressured over production targets.
Sky Fashion Myanmar Co., Ltd is owned by a Chinese national and is located at Mya Sein Yaung Industrial Zone, Mya Sabal 1 Road, Hlaingtharyar Township, Yangon. The factory currently produces for the Spanish brand Roly and employs around 1,500 workers.
