SEN YU Garment factory labours say that they are having a hard time because of being forced to work overtime all night (one day, one night and one morning) with the reasons of orders, and they are being pressured with firing if they refuse.

Normal working hours are from Monday to Friday from 8:00 am to 8:30 pm, and on Saturdays until 6:30 pm or 7:30 pm.The labours said that it caused them health problems as they have to arrive 10 minutes before the start of work, called for meetings during breaks, forced to work overtime overnight (one day, one night until one morning) without stopping frequently.

According to the labours, the Chinese-owned factory, which operates with more than 600 workers in the garment factory, is conducting excessive overtime recruitment. The factory is located in Bamaw Secretary Street, 53 bus station, Middle village peak, Hlaing thar Yar Township, Yangon.

“We have to work overtime until midnight on somedays. On way back home, we have difficulties when the military inspect us since they don’t provide us factory cards. I was robbed once when they forced overtime even on the pay day although I worked overtime the whole month”, said by a labour.

The labours said that the overtime calls were made under pressure without asking theirconsent, and the Chinese directly manage the factory and the all super and supervisors are insulting the labours.

Mandatory overtimes even on Sunday, pressuring if refuse, hiring a lot of day labours, discriminations, forcing to work overtime by pressuring with the firing from supers and all supers, forcing to sign OT, cutting daily wages (5,600 MMK) and Attendance Bonus (15,000) MMK if the labours take a leave or gate pass because of consecutive overtime and also cutting all grade bonuses A (40,000), B (30,000), C (20,000) MMK, said by the labours.

And they also explained their difficulties like being asked the impossible fabric standards, no set record for the standards, supers and all supers insult rudely while asking the standards, being managed directly by foreign Chinese national, the smell from overflowing toilets next to the dining area.

The labour said, "The main point is that we were forced to work overtime without taking a break. Although the relevant departments visited and checked the matter, they leave after only visiting the office and nothing has changed.”

It is reported that the factory manufactures and exports brands such as Sinsay and P&VV. There is also no Trade union in the workplace.

“They don’t give grade bonus although we have full attendance. The all super from cutting department don’t give to any of the labours who are uncomfortable with her.  We are threatened to not come to work and not getting the grade bonus if we didn’t work overtime. They said they don’t need the labours who don’t work overtime. They also discriminate us.”, said the labour.
