Sakura Garment factory had announced a wage increase, but workers told the Federation of General Workers Myanmar (FGWM) that not all departments are receiving equal wages.

“All workers were paid the same daily wage before the raise. But even though salaries were increased in June, helpers in the cutting, ironing, and store departments had their wages reduced by 2,000 kyats,” workers said.

Workers added that the factory is planning to set the daily wage at 10,000 kyats for helpers in cutting, ironing, store, and sewing line departments, while other departments and the sewing line itself are set to receive 11,000 kyats.

“We went to the HR office to report the unfair wage distribution. They said, ‘Work if you’re okay with the wage we offer. If not, you can leave,’” the workers said.

Workers argued that the daily wage should be equally distributed since all factory workers share the same working hours and tasks.

SAKURA Garment Factory is owned by Japanese citizen and manufactures AITOZ brand garments. More than 400 workers are employed at the factory, which is located in Phanchakwun U Shwe O Road, Hlaingthaya Industrial Zone (3), Hlaingthaya Township.
