Due to the rising cost of living, workers at Rum Yang (Myanmar) Garment Factory gathered in front of the factory’s HR office on June 11, calling for a daily wage increase of 13,000 kyats.
The workers from Rum Yang (Myanmar) Garment Factory, located on Maha Myine Road, Wartayar Industrial Zone, Shwepyithar Township, Yangon Region, have been staging collective demands for a wage increase for the fourth consecutive day.
The factory manufactures TEERANOVA and AMISU brands, and workers began their demands on June 6, calling for at least a 13,000 kyat daily wage increase.
According to the workers, they are requesting (1) a 13,000 kyats daily wage, (2) a 2,500 kyats per hour for overtime, and (3) a 60,000 kyat attendance bonus.
Supervisors pulled 50 workers inside the factory and pressured them to sign statements on the second day of the collective demands, while the workers currently participating in the protest have been denied formal tripartite negotiations and are not being allowed to re-enter the factory.
Amid soaring commodity prices and living expenses in Myanmar, the current minimum wage no longer provides sufficient support for workers' basic living needs. As a result, base-level factory workers are increasingly calling for raises in their minimum wages.
