Workers from the Gonminmyoung Huasheng garment factory, Thayarwaddy Township, Bago Region are demanding a wage increase, according to reports. Over 3,000 workers have joined the demand, which began on May 31.

Workers said they are asking for the current minimum daily wage of 4,800 kyats to be increased to 12,000 kyats, and for the daily attendance bonus to be raised from 20,000 kyats to 60,000 kyats.

They stated that the factory management agreed to increase only the attendance bonus but refused to raise the base daily wage. Moreover, workers said male employees were threatened with conscription.

“They said they’d increase the attendance bonus but not the daily wage. Workers didn’t accept that. Then the manager threatened that male workers would be conscripted,” a worker said.

A video clip shows that while the 3,200 factory workers are demanding higher wages, operations at the factory have currently been suspended.
