Workers at New Fubon Co.,Ltd say the factory deducted 10 days’ worth of earned bonuses from employees who did not work overtime on designated factory holidays, according to complaints submitted to the Industrial Workers’ Federation of Myanmar (IWFM).
An IWFM official said the factory has imposed overtime throughout the month, leaving workers without rest days and requiring them to work excessive hours.
Employees report that overtime shifts frequently extend late into the night or continue overnight. Workers who decline overtime are allegedly pressured by line supervisors and forced to sign overtime consent forms.
“Overtime runs through the night. Supervisors call us out and question us if we don’t work overtime. They force us to sign overtime agreements. They deduct the 10-day bonus we already earned if we refuse to work overtime on factory holidays,” a worker said.
Workers also allege that management sets unilateral production targets that are difficult to meet. Employees are required to work overtime without rest days when quotas are not achieved.
“They force us to work overtime if we fail to meet the targets. Supervisors shout and insult us in front of others. Because the targets are unfair, we sometimes cannot even take our lunch break and have to keep sewing,” a worker told Myanmar Labour News.
According to workers, a production line of around 20 sewing operators is required to complete up to 230 pieces per hour.
Employees further allege that many young workers aged 14, 15, and 16 are required to work overtime alongside adult workers under the same conditions.
Workers say factory toilets are in poor condition and other workplace facilities are inadequate. They report that no purified drinking water is provided and that employees must rely on water from filtration machines. Medical supplies are reportedly insufficient, and workers who faint while working are not allowed to rest properly in the clinic but must remain at their sewing stations.
Leave is also allegedly denied. Workers say that taking a day off results in deductions of daily wages, attendance bonuses, and other benefits.
The Chinese citizen-owned factory is located on Pyin Si Min Thar Gyi Road, Shwe Lin Ban Industrial Zone, Hlaingtharyar Township, Yangon. More than 350 workers are employed at the facility, which currently manufactures the Plus label.
