Myanmar Huasheng Golden Fashion Co., Ltd, a Chinese citizen-owned garment factory located in Anawrahta Industrial Zone, Hlaingtharyar Township Yangon, has dismissed nearly 200 workers, citing reasons such as being underage and using fake identification documents, according to reports from workers to the Industrial Workers Federation of Myanmar (IWFM).
“Over 100 workers were fired for allegedly being underage, and more than 70 were dismissed for entering with fake ID cards. But the factory checked ID cards before hiring us. Most of those who got fired have been working here for over a year,” a worker explained.
The majority of the dismissed workers are from northern Rakhine State, and returning home has become a challenge due to travel and housing difficulties, workers said.
Currently, the factory has reportedly decided not to terminate them immediately but is pressuring them to resign voluntarily after continuing work until the end of November.
“There has been no overtime because there are no more orders since mid-October. Now they’re using that as an excuse to dismiss workers unlawfully. We had to pay 5,000 kyats for the labour card just to get the job,” one worker added.
Workers also report that the factory has failed to grant any medical or casual leave, and any absences result in deductions exceeding 30,000 kyats.
Myanmar Huasheng Golden Fashion Co., Ltd employs around 1,000 workers and manufactures garments in a Chinese-owned facility in Hlaingtharyar Township, Yangon.
