Workers in the Quality Control (QC) at the Myantex garment factory in Shwe Pyi Thar Industrial Zone department say department heads are deducting wages without their consent, citing various personal and unofficial reasons.
“They deducted 15,000 kyats in one go during this Saturday’s payroll, 10,000 for Thadingyut offerings and 5,000 for a surprise birthday party for the Supervisor,” one worker reported.
Workers claim that both the QC Super and team leaders directly took the money from their wages without prior permission.
“We accept the 10,000 kyats for Thadingyut offerings, but the deduction for a birthday surprise is completely unacceptable,” a worker said.
They also reported being fined 10,000 kyats for refusing to do overtime. Although factory management became aware of the issue and instructed the money be returned, workers say they have yet to receive it.
Beyond unauthorized deductions, workers allege the All Super regularly instructs them to buy gifts and even borrows money from them without repayment.
“The supervisor tells us to buy fabric-related items, and often borrows 5,000 or 10,000 kyats. They never pay it back. It’s pure abuse of power,” one worker said.
Workers added that the same supervisor is also involved in moneylending with interest and directly takes repayments from workers' wage envelopes. While they are unhappy with the situation, they say they tolerate it out of fear of being fired.
After repeated incidents, factory management reportedly called a meeting, where workers say they were questioned with comments like, “Are you going to report your own supervisors?”
The Myantex Industrial Co. Ltd garment factory is located on main Pale Road, Shwepyitha Industrial Zone 3, according to workers.
