Myanmar Guotai Huasheng Glory Fashion Co., Ltd. has reportedly ordered long-term workers to undergo new registration and said they would be rehired as “new employees,” according to information received from the Industrial Workers’ Federation of Myanmar (IWFM).
A worker explained that the factory informed over 70 employees including those accused of using fake registration documents and those under legal working age on December 18 that they must work until December 30 and then complete a new registration process. “They said that after re-registering, workers who have already been here one or two years will be rehired as new staff. That means our seniority will be erased. They are not even giving leave for the process. Our years of service will be lost,” the worker said.
Workers claim that those selected for dismissal due to “age issues” are in fact long-term employees holding EC employment contracts. They also describe serious pressure inside the workplace, including excessive production demands and verbal abuse that affects workers’ mental well-being.
“Twenty-five workers must produce over 150 pieces per hour. Supervisors and Chinese line leaders shout at us if the target is not met. Besides regular yelling, they insult us about how we eat and even make discriminatory comments comparing us to Chinese staff,” another worker reported.
Workers also say they are denied legally required leave casual leave, medical leave, and general leave and face wage deductions of over 50,000 kyats for missing even a single day. They describe poor workplace conditions, including unsafe drinking water and unsanitary restrooms.
“They deduct 11,500 kyats from daily allowance and 40,000 kyats from attendance bonus if we miss a day. The drinking water is unsafe, and sometimes there’s no water at all. There aren’t enough toilets, and those that exist aren’t secure. The worst part is that male and female workers have to share the same toilets,” workers said.
Myanmar Guotai Huasheng Glory Fashion Co., Ltd., located near Gate 61, Myint Swe Green Industrial Zone, Hlaingtharyar Township, employs more than 1,000 workers. The factory is Chinese citizen-owned and manufacture garments brands such as LCW Vision and Xside, according to workers.
