Workers from Lita Myanmar Co., Ltd garment factory are being forced to work overtime without any days off. Foreign supervisors are said to scold them if they refuse to do overtime, according to statements made by workers to the Industrial Workers Federation of Myanmar (IWFM).
“They don't give us a single day off per month. We have to do overtime on every Sunday. There's no transportation provided even though they make us work overtime. The ferries only go to very far places. They scold us we can’t manage to do overtime. Both Chinese men and women scold us for not doing overtime,” they said.
Workers also reported that in addition to being forced into excessive overtime, they are not given their legal leave entitlements and their wages and attendance bonuses are being cut. Workers said they only earn just over 400,000 MMK in monthly wages despite working more than 50 hours of overtime and even on Sundays.
“We don’t get casual leave or sick leave. They still cut daily wage and attendance bonus even if we ask for leave due to emergency issues. They’re just deducting money every time. Even though they deduct for social security, they don’t allow us leave. If we complain, they come and inspect, but nothing changes. Workers don’t even know how the salary is calculated or deducted. It’s the lowest-paying factory in the industrial zone,” they said.
Inside the workplace, most of the workers are reportedly young people aged 15 or 16. They are hired without medical clearance and are made to work the same as adult workers. Pressure is also applied on them to meet production targets.
“When inspections come, I don’t know if they really don’t see the underage workers or just pretend not to. You can tell by just looking. They scold us like we can’t even do that little if we don’t meet the target. We get scolded again if quality drop,” they said.
Workers also stated that they are constantly monitored inside the workplace, even when going to the toilet or drinking water, and are forced to work under strict supervision.
Lita Myanmar Co., Ltd garment factory is located on Satsayar U Htun Road, Shwepyitha Industrial Zone (4), Shwepyitha Township, Yangon, and is a Chinese citizen-owned factory. The factory employs over 800 workers and produces for brands such as Hc, Burtle, and Onward.
