Due to financial hardship in meeting basic living needs, workers from Lita Myanmar Co., Ltd. have sought assistance from the Industrial Workers Federation of Myanmar (IWFM), calling for an increase in daily wage and the resolution of ongoing workplace violations.

The factory, owned by Chinese citizen, employs over 800 workers and manufacture brands such as Srrvo, Cross Linen, and Onward.

It is located on Satsayar U Htun Road, in Thadukan Industrial Zone 4, Shwepyitha Township, Yangon Region.

Workers reported that they are not granted their entitled casual and medical leave and they face deductions totaling over 48,000 kyats in daily wage, support allowances, and attendance bonuses if they miss even one day of work, resulting in financial losses.

They also stated that production targets exceed what they can realistically complete. Each person is required to produce at a rate of 40 garments in one sewing line with 40 workers.

“Overtime is required every day until 8:30 PM and on Saturdays we have to work until 6:00 PM. The employer says we should work more overtime if we want more pay. We still don’t make even 550,000 kyats even though we’re working about 12 hours a day. We want the daily wage increased since it's not enough to cover living costs, ,” one worker said.

To ensure a fair and dignified working environment, the workers are requesting the following issues to be addressed:

  1. Employers must stop demanding garment production quotas that workers cannot realistically meet.
  2. Employers must allow workers to take their entitled casual and medical leave.
  3. Employers must resolve issues related to overflowing toilets in the factory.
  4. Employers must stop requiring overtime work until 6:00 PM on Saturdays.
  5. Employers must stop assigning 15- and 16-year-old youth workers the same workload as adult workers.
  6. Employers must increase the daily wage for workers.
  7. Employers must provide the same daily wage to sanitation workers working under the same roof.
