Workers at Lat War (3) Co.,Ltd say machinery and factory equipment are being relocated without any official announcement regarding the factory’s future, according to complaints submitted to the Industrial Workers’ Federation of Myanmar (IWFM).
“We’ve been hearing that the factory will close in March or April. In January, workers saw equipment being moved to Wata Ya Industrial Zone,” an IWFM official said, citing workers’ reports.
Employees say management has not responded to rumors of closure or relocation. Instead, they believe the company is intentionally creating uncertainty to pressure workers into resigning voluntarily.
“The factory should inform workers transparently if they are going to close. If it’s relocating, they should clarify whether workers will be offered positions at the new site. Right now, they are creating stress so that workers will leave on their own,” a worker said.
As further indication of a possible shutdown, workers claim vacant positions in production lines are no longer being filled, with remaining employees required to absorb additional workloads.
According to workers, factory equipment is being transferred to Wataya, while incoming garment orders are being outsourced to external facilities for production. One worker added that the previously mandatory two hours of daily overtime have recently stopped.
More than 900 workers are currently employed at the factory. Employees say that in the past they were required to work overnight shifts and Sunday overtime without being granted leave.
“We weren’t given leave. They deducted 10,000 kyats in daily wages and 20,000 kyats in attendance bonuses if we missed a day. We received nothing if we missed two days. Previously, we didn’t even get Sundays off. Now they’ve stopped calling overtime and release production lines at 4:30 p.m.,” a female worker said.
There is no trade union although a Workplace Coordinating Committee (WCC) has been formed at the factory. The Chinese-owned factory is located on Seikkanthar Road, Industrial Zone (2), Hlaingtharyar Township, Yangon. It currently manufactures brands including KAPALUA, Regatta, and Mavi.
