Workers told Myanmar Labour News that a line manager from Hundred Garment Myanmar garment factory, is accepting bribes from underage child workers in exchange for jobs.

“We’ve heard of the law that says children should not be made to work. But there’s this person who’s asking for money from underage kids and giving them jobs at the Hundred Garment factory. They are the line manager. They lets them work if they pay 30,000 kyat even if they’re too young to work. Now, they’re asking up to 50,000 kyat,” they said.

It is also reported that those underage workers are made to work overtime in the factory. Workers said they have to work every day until 7:30 PM, and on some days, even until 10:30 PM.

“The child workers are people who are not yet 18. They are made to work overtime. The whole factory also has to stay until 7:30 p.m. After that, some people who can work the night shift are called to work until 10:30 p.m. Those night shift workers are given 5,000 kyat for dinner and breakfast. Accommodation is also arranged,” they said.

Workers said they have been made to work on Sundays as well for the past two weeks although they have to work every Saturday until 4:30 PM. It is also reported that they are given only about 5 to 10 minutes break time when working until 7:30 p.m.

The line manager is also said to be handling workplace issues by quietly forcing workers to sign warning letters, firing them, and even physically abusing them in groups.

“This manager is okay if we get along with them. But they’ll shout and say things like, ‘You won’t get fabric,’ or ‘I can’t give you your quota,’ if we don’t. They’ll even hit or fire us if they don’t favor. Recently, their group ganged up on one supervisor and physically assaulted them. That supervisor had a dislocated hand and couldn’t move. Their [that supervisor] whole body was covered in bruises and scratches,” they said.

Workers said there are seven production lines in the factory, and the line managers discriminates and treats workers unequally.

Hundred Garment Myanmar employs around 700 workers, and the factory owner is known to be a Chinese citizen. Workers said the factory operates near the Nwar Chan bus stop, Thadukan Industrial Zone, Shwepyithar Township, Yangon.
