Hundred Garment Myanmar factory dismissed (12) workers with over 3 to 6 months of service, claiming they were underage, according to the affected workers who reported to the Solidarity Trade Union of Myanmar (STUM).
“The factory’s HR manager called the 12 workers to the office on July 1st, around 6:30 AM, and asked them to sign documents to receive their wages, saying they were being let go for being underage,” said STUM.
On June 29th, Myanmar Labour News reported that the line manager at Hundred Garment Myanmar had taken bribes from underage child laborers and hired them to work in the factory. Following this report, 12 workers were dismissed on the grounds of being underage although it’s unknown whether the factory management took any action against the line manager.
The dismissed workers have around six months of work experience and refused to accept the compensation wages offered by the HR department and did not sign any documents, instead reporting the issue to STUM.
“Three workers have over 6 months of service, and the remaining nine have only 6 months of service. It’s known that two of them had already signed Employment Contracts (EC),” the report stated.
There are about 700 workers employed at Hundred Garment Myanmar, and the factory owner is a Chinese citizen. The factory is located in Thadukan Industrial Zone, Shwepyitha Township, Yangon, according to the workers.
