Hello,
This is from workers at Hope One Co., Ltd garment factory.
The factory has been requiring workers to work overtime at night beyond the hours that were officially approved. Even after reporting the issue to Township Labour Office official U Win Thu, the factory continues to require additional night overtime shifts.
Normally, the overtime that is officially submitted is until 6 p.m. However, the factory is now requiring workers to continue working until 8 p.m. The documents state that overtime will only be until 6 p.m. when collecting workers’ signatures to submit the overtime approval to the labour office.
But in practice, we are being required to continue working until 8 p.m. On March 3, when overtime was required, we contacted U Win Thu to report the situation, but we still had to continue working.
Overtime until 8 p.m. is now required about three or four days every week. We are also required to work until 8 p.m. on Saturdays.
When we work overtime in the evening, we are not given any break time. The only break we receive is during the lunch break, and there are no other rest periods.
Recently, Sunday rest days have also been replaced with advance working days under the explanation that they are substitutes for the upcoming Thingyan holiday.
Except for the Tabaung full moon day, the factory has not provided other rest days. The overtime workload has become even heavier in recent days.
The factory is located on Maung Kyan Thi Road, Shwe Lin Ban Industrial Zone, Hlaingtharyar Township, Yangon, near the Alel Ywar Fire Station. Around 1,000 workers are employed at the factory.
