Over 1,000 workers from GTIG U & G (Factory 1), located in the Wataya Industrial Zone, Shwe Pyi Thar Township, Yangon Region, staged a work stoppage on May 27 demanding a minimum daily wage of 13,000 kyats and 3,000 kyats for overtime. The issue was resolved within three hours, according to reports.

STUM announced that the wage demand, which began that afternoon, reached a resolution in three hours, and workers were granted the same benefits as those agreed upon for Factory 2, with both sides signing a collective agreement.

Previously, workers from GTIG 2 had also demanded a minimum daily wage of 13,000 kyats and 3,000 kyats overtime pay, but a negotiated settlement set the daily wage at 11,500 kyats and the overtime pay at 2,100 kyats.

Due to the rising cost of living and inflation in Myanmar, the current official minimum wage no longer meets the basic needs of factory workers. As a result, basic-level workers across various factories have increasingly been calling for wage increases to keep up with living expenses.
