Workers told the Solidarity Trade Union of Myanmar (STUM) that Golden Color Fashion garment factory required them to work overnight overtime. It was reported that workers from non-sewing departments had to work through the night on July 1.

The standard working hours are eight hours per day and forty-eight hours per week according to Myanmar labour law. Sunday is designated as a rest day for most factories. Any overtime work must be formally proposed, and workers’ consent must be obtained in writing.

In addition, factories are required to post clear and visible notices regarding approved overtime work so that workers are properly informed. Weekly overtime hours must not exceed twenty hours without workers’ consent and without formal approval for overtime, as stated by the law.

The law also outlines penalties for unlawful overtime practices, including fines and imprisonment. Golden Color Fashion garment factory employs around 1,000 workers and operates on Myataungwungyi U Mho Road, Industrial Zone 3, Insein Township, Yangon.

Workers at S&S Garment in Shwepyitha Township also informed STUM back in June that they were made to work overnight overtime for the entire month, raising serious concerns about health impacts.
