Workers at Glary Jun Xing Garment say the factory is discriminating among workers and forcing them to work excessive overnight overtime and midnight overtime. According to workers, they are required to work overnight and midnight overtime continuously on a daily basis and are also made to work on Sundays, which are supposed to be rest days.
“Factory managers and supervisors are the ones forcing overtime. If workers have personal matters and cannot work overtime, the factory manager, managers, and supervisors scold, curse, and shout at them,” workers said.
The factory reportedly consists of two buildings, referred to as Factory 1 and Factory 2. Workers said they are also forced to sew garments from other factories and Factory 1 by working overtime.
Workers added that overtime is imposed without asking for their consent and that everything is carried out strictly according to the wishes of the factory manager and management.
“The workplace feels like a prison. Factory managers, managers, and supervisors patrol and monitor workers all day long. Even if we talk about work-related matters, they make us sign warning letters,” a worker said.
Workers also alleged wage discrimination by the factory and said that when they resign, they are not paid the full daily wages they earned.
“Old workers receive a daily wage of 10,500 kyats. Skilled new workers are paid only 9,000 kyats, and trainee new workers receive 8,000 kyats. When we quit, we don’t receive the full 10,500 kyats we earned; only 7,800 kyats are paid,” workers said.
Due to an insufficient number of ferry buses, workers are forced to hang onto vehicles during transportation. Workers said that although responsible persons have personally witnessed this situation, no additional arrangements have been made.
“The manager himself has seen female workers hanging onto the ferry vehicle. Even after reporting it, nothing has been arranged. We are still hanging on,” a female worker said.
Workers further said that the factory does not provide a proper working environment and fails to grant legally mandated leave and benefits. As a result, wages are deducted under the pretext of absenteeism.
“We pay monthly social security contributions, but we don’t receive medical leave or any other leave. They deduct 10,500 kyats of daily wages and 50,000 kyats of attendance bonus for absence. Drinking water is insufficient and frequently cut off. The nurse who should be stationed at the clinic is not there and instead is conducting interviews in the HR office. There is no medicine. Only on inspection days by the labor office is everything fully prepared,” workers said.
Workers also reported that more than 30 young workers aged 14, 15, and 16 are being employed at the factory and are not receiving equal wages.
Glary Jun Xing Garment Co., Ltd’s garment factory is located at Factory No. 270, Shwe Lin Ban Industrial Zone, Pan Pe Khaung Maung Khat Road, Yangon. It is owned by a Chinese citizen and employs more than 800 workers. The factory is manufacturing the Sinsay brand trousers, shirts, and sets.
