I am writing to report the situation at the G & F Myanmar garment factory, located in Kalihtaw village, Hlegu Township. As it is in a village area, the factory does not follow labour laws the way factories in Yangon’s industrial zones are expected to.
The line supervisor says the they must personally come to the factory to submit the medical certificate when a worker is unwell and takes medical leave, .
What I do not understand is this: if a worker is too sick to come to work, how can they come to the factory just to submit a document? If they were able to come to the factory, they would simply return to work. Even getting the medical certificate from the Social Security clinic is already difficult.
I wonder whether the factory officials who instruct the line supervisors do not consider whether such demands are reasonable, or whether they are deliberately applying rigid rules to pressure workers.
Whether it is earned leave or casual leave, when workers return after taking leave, the line supervisor scolds and reprimands them for being absent. Worse still, there have been cases of physical assault against workers.
I would like those who call themselves factory leaders to be properly educated about labour laws and workers’ rights.
At present, G & F Myanmar is manufacturing the YAMAMAY, GEMO, and UNDIZ brands. The factory employs more than 1,000 workers.
