Exploiting from day laborers

Workers from HUITAI MANUFACTURING(MYANMAR) Co.,ltd garment factory said that there are more than 300 workers in the factory and more than 50 of them are day laborers but not hired as permanent stuffs even if their length of service exceeds 3 months and they are being exploited humiliated in the workplace by verbally abused and asking excessive fabric outputs.

The factory is owned by a Chinese national and it is located at Shwe Yin Aye Kyaung Street, Hlaing Thar Yar Industrial Zone 5 and manufacturing SInsay brand apparels.

“There are more than 50 day laborers and they are not hired as permanent stuffs even if their length of service exceeds 3 months. The working hours are from 7:30 am to 7:00 pm but get paid only 8,000 kyats per day and 6,000 kyats per day for Saturdays where we have to work from 7:30 am to 5:00 pm. They only give us 5,000 kyats after calling us the whole day on Sundays. Day laborers are being exploied as they don’t have attendance bonus, expert fees and holidays but only daily wages,” said a worker.

The factory dismiss the day laborers who refuse to work overtime immediately in addition of the violations mentioned above making workers to suffer more. 

Furthermore, there are around 45 workers per cavity in the factory and they are assigned to sew 200 coats per day and it exceeds 200 sometimes,” said a worker.

“The supervisors verbally abuse us every day if we don’t finish the output demands. The Chinese nationals participate too,” said a worker.

There is no workplace coordination committee to address the workplace disputes and workers are being verbally suppressed and humiliated.

They are not entitled to social security, casual and medica leaves and cut 4,800 kyats daily wages and 10,000 kyats attendance bonus and daily allowance 1,000 kyats for a single day of absent. There is drinking water storage in the factory sometimes and workers are working without drinking water in the hot weather.

Workers said that they want to request the factory to appoint day laborers with more than 3 months of services as permanent workers, the foreigners not to directly manage the factory, to ask only the possible fabric outputs and not to verbally abuse the workers.
