On May 9, SAC’s Ministry of Labour announced through a state-run newspaper that social security-insured workers affected by the recent earthquake are eligible to apply for 40% disaster-related family support.

This support applies to insured workers in regions officially declared as earthquake-affected zones: Nay Pyi Taw, Mandalay Region, Sagaing Region, Bago Region, Magway Region, and Shan State. Applications must be submitted within three months from the date of the announcement.

Eligible insured workers must apply through their employers or departments to the respective township Social Security Board (SSB) offices. Required documents must be prepared and submitted on behalf of affected workers.

Workers currently employed and who had contributed to the Social Security Fund for February 2025 are eligible if they were affected by the earthquake. The benefit will be calculated as 40% of the worker’s recorded income. For example, if a worker’s income is 144,000 kyats, the support amount will be 57,600 kyats.

Applications must include photo evidence of property damage caused by the disaster and an official endorsement letter from the relevant village or ward administrator confirming the loss of property.

Submitted applications will be reviewed and verified by the respective township SSB committees. Only verified applications will be approved for disbursement.

Additionally, if employers or workplaces fail to register workers according to the Social Security Law, do not make contributions based on the actual number of workers, fail to submit correct wage-based contributions, or underreport wages—resulting in insured workers being ineligible for benefits or receiving reduced compensation—the employer must compensate the affected workers on behalf of the Social Security Board (SSB) as stipulated under Section 69 of the 2012 Social Security Law.
