Workers at Dishang Fashion (Myanmar) garment factory have reached a resolution regarding their call for increased daily wages after eight days of demands, according to sources among the workers.

Workers had initiated the strike due to rising commodity prices and low wages that made it difficult to meet basic living expenses. They were able to sign a collective agreement with the employer at a slightly lower rate although their demand for a daily wage of 13,000 kyats was not fully met.

According to a worker, “The new wage includes 4,800 kyats basic pay, 2,000 kyats subsidy, and 4,200 kyats additional support, totaling 11,000 kyats. Skill-based bonuses were increased by 500 kyats per level, and the attendance bonus was raised by 10,000 kyats.”

The agreement also stipulates that workers will not receive wages for the strike period between May 20 and 26 under a “No Work No Pay” arrangement. Other labour-related rights and protections were also included in the collective agreement reached between workers and management.

Since May 19, workers at Dishang Fashion had been demanding a 13,000 kyat base wage, an increase of 1,000 kyats in skill-based bonuses per level, a 20,000 kyat increase in attendance bonuses, the reformation of the workplace negotiation committee, fixed production targets with no further increases, legal entitlements to leave, and more efficient gate pass procedures—making a total of 12 demands.

Dishang Fashion (Myanmar) Co., Ltd is a Chinese-owned factory located on Min Gyi Maha Min Khaung Road, in the Shwe Than Lwin Industrial Zone, Hlaing Thar Yar Township. It employs around 900 workers and manufactures ONLY and Bestseller brands.
