Dishang Fashion Myanmar garment factory suspended around 50 daily wage workers after demands were made for wage increases, according to workers. The factory employs about 100 daily wage workers, and today, about half of them have been suspended from work.

“On May 30, they suddenly told us not to come to work anymore after paying our daily wages. They didn’t even give a reason. They just said we should stop working for a week. There was no prior notice. The HR manager who laid us off said it was on the instruction of the factory manager and Ma Yi Yi (interpreter and assistant factory manager),” workers said.

Workers reported that while daily wage workers in the Iron department were made permanent, the rest were not, and now face frequent dismissals without being appointed as full-time employees.

Among the suspended daily workers are those who have worked for over a year and others with over three months of experience. They were not promoted to regular workers and have now been suspended. Workers added that they only received a 10,000 kyats daily wage and 2,100 kyats per hour for overtime, without any other benefits provided by law.

“They didn’t make us permanent, and now they’ve even stopped our work. With our jobs gone, we still have hostel fees and food debts due in the next five days. We are really struggling,” said workers.

Workers also said that even a single day of leave results in dismissal in Dishang Fashion Myanmar factory, and they are also required to deposit the daily attendance bonus. Moreover, workers are sent home and only given 5,000 kyats for half a day’s work when audit representatives from buyer brands visit the factory.

“WCC told us to take a week off as the factory wants when we asked them to help. But they gave no clear answer when we asked if we’d be called back after that,” said workers.

A factory representative said the suspension was due to work requirement issues and that the workers would be asked to return on the coming Wednesday.

“We can’t run the factory without daily wage workers. But they want one person to do the work of two. We don’t take it,” said a factory worker.

Dishang Fashion Myanmar garment factory is located on Min Gyi Maha Min Khaung Road, Shwe Than Lwin Industrial Zone, Hlaing Thar Yar Township. The factory employs around 1,000 workers including daily wage workers. According to recent reports, Myanmar Labour News has learned that they are manufacturing the Bestseller brand.
