Negotiations have yet to reach a conclusion although workers at Myanmar Fala Fala garment factory have been making wage increase demands for 10 days, workers said. Workers have been asking for increases in daily wage, attendance bonus, and overtime pay since July 17.

“They agreed to pay 10,000 kyats for working on Sundays. It’s also fine that they agreed to clearly define and split the forward and backward sections of the attendance bonus. They also agreed not to cut the attendance bonus if we leave at 4:30 PM with a gate pass. But the factory flatly refuses to agree when it comes to paying 12,000 kyats for daily wage and 2,700 kyats per hour for overtime,” said the workers.

Currently, workers are receiving a daily wage of 10,000 kyats and 2,100 kyats per hour for overtime, and they are requesting these amounts to be increased. Workers said if their demands cannot be met, they are willing to negotiate for a legal separation with severance pay — but the factory refuses that as well.

“They won’t agree to increase daily wages or overtime pay. Negotiations are breaking down as the days of protest go on. It’s becoming harder to keep working. That’s why we’re asking to be dismissed. The factory says they’ll pay for only 16 working days and told us to either leave or continue working under those terms,” they said.

Workers said the factory blocked access with vehicles and iron barriers, causing difficulties in getting drinking water and using the toilets during the 9 days of protest. Despite multiple negotiation attempts between employers and workers at the regional labour office, no agreement has been reached, they added.

“They said they’ll negotiate again at the regional labour office next Monday. We hope it gets resolved. But we don’t know how it will turn out,” said a female worker involved in the demands.

Myanmar Fala Fala Clothing Garment Factory is located on Mya Road, Thadukan Industrial Zone and employs around 2,000 workers. Myanmar Labour News have learnt that the factory is currently manufacturing a Canada-based brand.
