Workers at the Chuan Qi garment factory, located on Ngamoeyeik Road, Wataya Industrial Zone, Shwepyitha Township, are staging a collective protest, according to reports. Workers said the protest began on the afternoon of February 27 and is still ongoing at present.
“They reduced the attendance bonus that had been given. We are demanding that ticket fees be paid in full and that the attendance bonus be paid as previously agreed. We are not asking for more. They reduced the payments,” a factory worker said.
It is reported that workers have submitted 16 demands, including equal wages and other rights violations under labor laws that they say have not been fulfilled. Around 200 workers are currently participating in the protest. A female worker said they joined because there had been cases of forced labor practices.
“They said they would not pay unless we completed 30,000 kyats worth of garment fees. For garment fees, there are also cases where we have to sew collectively. There is almost nothing left to earn since we earn only one or two kyats per piece,” she said.
The Chuan Qi garment factory has been operating for about a year on the upper floor of the Shuangfa sewing factory, but workers said no EC contracts have been signed. The factory has not yet responded to the demands, including the attendance bonus. The Township Labor Office has replied that it will come to negotiate, according to workers.
