Workers say that Casico Garment Co., Ltd. is forcing them to work compulsory overtime without providing rest breaks, including overnight shifts. According to workers, the factory requires overtime until 8:30 p.m. on regular days and, on some days, forces workers to work through the entire night.
“We start work at 8:00 a.m. and finish at 6:30 p.m., but we’re not given any rest. We have to continue overtime until 8:30 p.m. Even if we don’t want to work overtime, supervisors say we must do it and pressure us to stay. On Saturdays, we are forced to work from 6:00 p.m. straight through the night,” a worker said.
Workers also said that emergency gate passes are not easily granted, and leave days and leave entitlements are denied, with daily wages and benefits being deducted as punishment.
“When they don’t give a gate pass, we have to go home wearing our work clothes, and then they deduct our grade pay. They don’t allow leave or benefits. There is no medical leave either. If we miss work, they deduct our daily wage, attendance bonus, and skill allowance. Altogether, they cut around 60,000 kyats,” a worker said.
Workers also reported that line managers and supervisors inside the factory use abusive language while demanding production targets.
“On a sewing line with about 30 workers, they demand up to 90 quilted jackets per hour. Each worker has to sew three or four operations to meet the target. The line manager swears so badly it’s unbearable, comparing us to animals. The supervisors do the same,” a worker said.
Casico Garment Co., Ltd. is located on Seikkantha Road, Industrial Zone 3, Hlaingthaya Township, Yangon. It is reportedly a Chinese-owned factory employing around 400 workers and manufacturing the Lutique and Radwear brands, according to workers.
