Bago VHT garment factory calling all night overtimed and forcing the workers to work on Sundays

Workers from Bago based VHT garment factory said that an all-night overtime for tomorrow (July 18th is announced) in the workplace. They said that they have to work continuously without a break until 7:00 p.m. since after the lunch and extended to 5:00 a.m. as an all-night overtime

‘We worked on every Sundays in previous weeks but they are calling overtime by saying that we have 3 day offs,” said a worker.

Workers don’t want to work all-night overtime as they are already working overtime every day including the Sundays and the excessive overtime cause them health issues. A seamstress said that the factory announced the mandatory all-night overtime in the meeting on July 16th.

“The factory intimidated us that the wages for three day offs and benefits will not be added to the salary if we don’t work overtime on Thursday (Tomorrow),” a worker said.

They continued that each worker will suffer around 100,000 kyats if their daily wages, attendance bonus and grade bonus are cut. According to the worker, the all-night overtime is neither announced by speakers or on the board but the all super themselves confirmed.“Workers said in the meeting that they don’t want to work. The all super arrived sooner that it is mandatory and wages for three day offs and benefits will be cut if we don’t work,” a worker explained.

There are around 1,500 workers working in the two buildings inside the VHT factory compound. The factory is manufacturing YZ brand jackets and the workers said there is no resolves in labor right violations although there is a workplace coordination team. 

The factory is owned by a Chinese national and located near the Hsinphyu Kwin crossroad, Bago Industrial Zone, Bago.
