Thar Gyi
We are workers currently employed at the Sunlong Sport factory. The factory produces sports gloves. It is located on Palae Road, Thar Dukan Industrial Zone, Shwe Pyi Thar Industrial Zone, not far from Nwar Chan bus stop.
Sunlong Sport factory is divided into Building A and Building B. We are from Building A, which operates with around 200 workers. Inside the workplace, workers are oppressed by the area supervisor. This is because social security leave (medical leave) is not granted. The area supervisor speaks harshly, abuses authority under the pretext of being a superior, and acts in an oppressive manner.
The factory officially allows social security leave when workers are absent due to illness. However, when workers who took social security leave return to work, the area supervisor verbally confronts and scolds them.
The area supervisor also says that if social security leave is taken again, it will not be approved. In addition to verbal pressure for taking leave, bonuses are reduced or not paid at all. We understand that medical leave is a legally entitled leave. We want to know whether it is allowed to reduce or deny bonuses for taking such leave.
The assistant supervisor’s manner of speaking is extremely harsh. They abuse power by claiming authority as a superior. They pressure line supervisors by demanding excessive production targets.
Even senior factory management does not shout at or speak harshly to workers. However, the assistant supervisor uses their position to intimidate workers. The things said are often not related to work but include personal attacks.
The factory is recruiting workers for a branch to be opened in Thailand. If the assistant supervisor dislikes certain workers, they tell the Chinese managers that those workers are incompetent and should not be selected. Only people connected to the assistant supervisor are chosen.
There is no WCC or union at the factory.
Because the assistant supervisor has a close relationship with the Chinese manager, they abuse their power and act oppressively. They behave as if they do not care who we complain to. As workers’ social and labour rights are being violated, we are reporting this matter.
There are only two HR staff at the factory. When information from workers reaches assistant supervisors through HR, the verbal abuse becomes even worse. Furthermore, the factory does not resolve workers’ problems at all.
